Installing the Rhino-Rack Back Bone System

Intro

I recently received the latest and greatest mod from Rhino-Rack, the Back Bone system for the Chevy Colorado. This system is a replacement for some issues that I had on the RLT600 leg mounted rack system that I had previously. Rhino-Rack was kind enough to replace my system and upgrade me to the Back Bone system.

I've made a complete video that details the install process and everything we did. You can find the video embedded below. I will also include the complete parts list I used for this install below the video.

Note: It is NOT required to do a complete bolt through, nor is it required to pull down the headliner. Rhino-Rack supplies the required rivnuts for installation, along with the proper 9mm drill bit (last drill bit used, others are required to buy).I did a complete bolt through install after determining that some of the new holes would combine into the old holes and the rivnuts may not seat correctly.

The Things You'll Need List:

These are the items you will need, per Rhino-Racks instructions:

  • Center Punch
  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • Complete Drill Bit Set or at least:
    • 1/8 (3mm)
    • 3/16 (5mm)
    • 9mm - Supplied by Rhino-Rack for rivenut install!
  • Marker
  • Metric Rivnut Tool
  • Drill Stops
  • Cold Galvanising Paint
  • 13mm Wrench
  • Clevis Hook
  • Vacuum

IF you are doing a complete bolt-through install like I did, then add the following:

  • 2x M6x25mm Socket Head Screws (We used these for the last bolt on each side!)
  • 1/4 OR 5/16 Drill Bits
  • 7mm Socket
  • 8mm Socket
  • 10mm Socket
  • ^^ Assuming if you have sockets you also have a Socket Wrench
  • Silicone

Conclusion

I hope this helped show how to install this awesome new system from Rhino-Rack. A kind reminder that you DO NOT need to drop the headliner in order to do the normal install. It is only required when doing a complete bolt through install like I have chosen to do.
